The Lara Big Band is seeking musicians of all big band instruments, especially a pianist and trombonists - email hello@larabigband.org if you're interested!

For musicians

The Lara Big Band is Geelong’s premier community big band, committed to delivering high-quality performances and providing an engaging environment for musicians of various skill levels. We welcome both seasoned players and those returning to music after a break. Our band is a mix of enthusiastic amateurs and serious musicians, all dedicated to making great music and having a fantastic time together.

Current vacancies

Visit the Current Vacancies page for details on the positions we are currently looking to fill.

If you are eager to join but don't play an instrument that we have a listed vacancy for, please reach out! We love having extra musicians across all our desks.

Instruments we use

The Lara Big Band is a Count Basie Orchestra-style "5444" big band, consisting of:

  • Vocals

  • 5 saxophones (2 alto, 2 tenor, baritone)

  • 4 trumpets

  • 4 trombones

  • Rhythm section (Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums)

We try to carry more than just the minimum numbers
of these instruments to allow for absences etc.

Music we play

Our repertoire spans a variety of genres, including:

  • Jazz Standards

  • Swing

  • Big Band Classics

  • Contemporary Jazz

  • Funk

  • Blues

We aim to challenge our musicians while ensuring an enjoyable playing experience. There's something in our repertoire for everyone, from those seeking a bit of nostalgia to those looking to push their musical boundaries.

Difficulty levels

We cater to a wide range of skill levels:

  • Intermediate: For musicians with basic proficiency looking to improve.

  • Advanced: For experienced musicians seeking challenging and rewarding pieces.

  • Returning Players: If you haven't played since high school, we're a perfect fit to help you get back into the groove.

  • Music reading: The ability to read music is essential for all positions.

Our ensemble would be the best fit for musicians with at least AMEB Grade 4 competence (usually around 3-4 years playing experience). Musicians at this level will be able to engage with the music, whilst more advanced musicians will still find plenty to challenge them. If you played music through high school and are looking to "knock the rust off" and re-engage with your love of music, our band will be perfect for you.

If you're not sure, bring your instrument along to rehearsal, sit in with us, and see how you go!

Interested but don't play a big band instrument or are a beginner?

Don't let that stop you! There are a variety of ensembles that will suit you. Don't hesitate to reach out to us, have a chat, and we will either suggest you come along and sit in on one of our rehearsals, or will be able to direct you to another local music ensemble that may be a better fit, such as:

Rehearsals

  • When: Every Thursday evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

  • Where: Cloverdale Community Centre - Lara, 9-11 Waverley Rd, Lara VIC 3212
